Twitter Tools Fix – WordPress

Twitter tools is broken…here’s how to fix it. I noticed that Twitter Tools wasn’t showing my latest tweets in the side bar, nor was it posting to Facebook from my WordPress websites.  I checked a few clients also and they all looked to have the same issue.  Seems Twitter had updated the application requirements, which means we have to jump through a few hoops to fix things.

I tried updating it myself at 6am, and missed a couple of things.  So I thought I’d share a step by step guide for you.

Upgrade Twitter Tools Plugin

Go to your WordPress Plugins Page (it’s in your left hand navigation). Scroll down till you find your Twitter Tools App and click on Upgrade Automatically

You should get a page that looks like this.  Click on return to plugins page.

Upgrade Plugin

At the top of the page you’ll see a box telling you need to update your Twitter Tools Settings > Click It

On the next page Click the link as shown below and it should open a new window.

The window looks like below.  Enter your Twitter Login and Password.

It will then ask you to enter some information.  Just fill it in as I have below or follow the instructions on the Twitter Tools Plugin Page.  BE SURE to change the default access type to READ AND WRITE (it will be read only by default).

New Twitter Application _

Once you hit register, and you’ve followed the instructions you should be taken to this confirmation page, which has your API info.  Grab the consumer key and consumer secret key from this page (don’t copy any other code for now!).

This is where you should be pasting the consumer keys to incase your not sure.

Twitter Tools Options

Pay attention this is where I went into autopilot and stuffed up!

The Access Token codes are not the one’s you see directly under the consumer keys on your Twitter API page.  These can be found by clicking on the My Access Token in the top right hand menu

daveandersononline Settings _

You will see the codes as per below.

Paste these codes into your Twitter Tool Plugin Page as below. IMPORTANT: At this stage, open Twitter in another window and login.

Once you have logged into Twitter, hit Connect and BOOM  it should update!
